Cryptocurrency, a digital or virtual currency, relies on cryptography for security measures. Unlike traditional currencies, it operates in a decentralized manner, free from government or financial institution control. With cryptocurrencies, individuals have the ability to engage in peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions directly, eliminating the need for intermediaries.

Cryptocurrencies differ from traditional fiat currencies. They are not stored in physical wallets or bank accounts. Instead, they are stored on a blockchain, a decentralized ledger that securely records transactions across a network of computers.

Cryptocurrencies can be used as a medium of exchange, but they have also been used for other purposes, such as smart contracts, decentralized finance (DeFi), stores of value, governance, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Some of the most popular cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, ADA and USDT. Bitcoin is the first digital currency. It is the most well-known cryptocurrency which was created in 2009 by an individual or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin stands as the pioneering and widely recognized cryptocurrency. Following its inception, a multitude of other cryptocurrencies have surfaced, each possessing distinct features and serving specific objectives. These cryptocurrencies can be accessed through crypto wallets or exchanges. While people often say that cryptocurrencies are "stored" in wallets, they are actually stored on a blockchain.

Blockchains are distributed ledgers that record transactions across a network of computers. This makes them very secure and transparent. Cryptocurrencies also have the characteristic of immutability, meaning that once a transaction is recorded on the blockchain, it cannot be changed.
